Of course, you’re both absolutely right. Given how little we know about the background, my interpretation is ultimately just speculation.

What I mainly wanted to highlight is that, in my view, the story still works quite well. There’s a certain narrative charm in keeping the world-building minimal and plunging straight into the scene.
Considering how little room we have for storytelling, jumping right into the scene seems like a good strategy for me. I want to be pulled into the story from the first sentence on, so I want the reader to have something to be intrigued about as soon as possible. It's the same reason I usually chose the first couple of sentences for my teaser text. I had to deliberately deviating from that in Woman in red, to maintain anonymity. Which I doubt i managed at all.

The tuxedo is a nice touch. As short stories go, it has a nice, efficient flow.

Great story, and I love that we still know so little about the brotherhood, other than that ot is not as straightforward as we might have assumed. I also like the sense that the decisions he made in that room, are now etched upon his identity within the society. Such an open and potentially rich narrative road ahead.

Yes the decisions he made, show the rest of the society what kind of man he is. While his actions might not be formally condemned, will still be judged at every interaction. Other members might not have done the same might shun him in the future.
