Kett has led a miserable life of loneliness and contempt until the kind-hearted cashier who works beside him smiles his way. Convinced she's his soulmate, his untamed obsession spirals into terrifying delusion and he becomes determined to prove that what he calls love is worth any price, no matter who has to pay in suffering…

May 8th, 1999

The food court assaulted every one of Kett’s senses. Greasy garlic collided with artificial cinnamon, synthetic vanilla, and the pungent reek of fry-oil, creating a nauseating medley of scents so dense the air itself felt suffocated by them. Vacuous conversation echoed off the tiled walls as the materialistic swine who frequented the shopping center shuffled from store to store, mistaking consumerism for actual fulfillment. And when fatigue finally settled in, they’d gather in the food court to stuff themselves silly with overpriced junk food and sugar-laden drinks (as if another purchase might actually satisfy the emptiness gnawing away deep inside them). Even the sunlight pouring in from the skylight felt hostile, its garish brilliance exposing every ugly corner of human vapidity and overconsumption.

He loathed it all.

Kett had worked in the food court for eight miserable months, employed as a fry cook at The Patty Palace, the lowly position not only indicative of his pledbian station but also the fuck-up that he called his life. For the entirety of his beleaguered existence he’d never known a solid good feeling. His parents had been abusive alcoholics. At nine the courts had torn him away from their home and placed him into the foster care system, where he was moved from one loveless house to the next. He dropped out of high school and ran away at fifteen, drifting from city to city, state to state, ever since. He’d always been too odd to make friends, too ‘insane’ to attract women, and far too convinced that happiness simply wasn't in the cards for him.

Until she came along.

Autumn.

Even her name was perfect, fall had always been his favorite time of year. She was gorgeous, she smelled so good, like amber and lilac, and if you could believe it, she was actually nice to him. She had thick brown hair that she often wore in a single long braid that was placed off to the side. Her eyebrows were plucked in elegant arches, her nails attended to in the exact same fashion: always flawlessly manicured. She had big blue eyes that radiated a kindness that Kett seldom found in anyone else. She wore the prettiest make-up, not too much, she used cosmetics to enhance her natural beauty instead of painting something entirely new like most bitches. And her lips, God, they were perfect: full, soft, and impossible to ignore. Kett often wondered what they tasted like—perhaps like the strawberry bubblegum she was always chewing?

Her body was ideal: nice big breasts that he’d kill a thousand times over just to feel beneath his palms. She had a Venus tummy, a beautiful hourglass with just the right amount of fat curving the bottom into something artful; the sheer definition of womanhood as far as Kett was concerned. She had wide luscious hips. Perfect for bearing his children. He liked to imagine her on all fours in front of him, his hands buried in the soft flesh of those wide hips as he fucked her senseless, Autumn, of course, moaning his name and telling him how much she loved him the entire time. Nature had been unusually generous in sculpting her lower half. Her sensational hips swept outward before tapering into voluptuous thighs, while her rounded backside completed the most superb silhouette that had ever been crafted by the hand of God.

Despite how briefly he’d known Autumn, Kett was convinced she was his soul mate. He’d certainly spent enough time following her around and studying her to be sure. He knew she attended the local community college and was studying communications to become a 9-1-1 dispatcher just like her single mother who worked tirelessly to support her and her younger sister, Cadence. She drove a burgundy 1983 Chevy Impala with 213,486 miles on it. She had two best friends: Marisol and Fatima, the three girls spending most of their time driving around listening to Britney Spears tapes, or meandering through city parks if they weren’t off to the movies to see the latest Leonardo DiCaprio film. She lived at 1122 East Linsey St, apartment three on the ground floor—which made it incredibly easy to peek in through her window at night and watch her sleep; stroking himself to completion each and every time.

Yes, Autumn had been the only thing he could think of since she’d started working as a cashier at The Patty Palace three months ago. She infiltrated every dream, every waking thought, every breath he drew was flavored by Autumn. Even now, as he surveyed the disgusting patrons of the miserable food court, Autumn lingered in the back of his mind. It was Saturday, you see, which meant his love was scheduled at 4:00PM. It was now 4:30. He wasn’t concerned, however, she was often late. His girl had no mind for time.

“Breaks over Kett,” snapped Randall, the manager of The Patty Palace, the slight middle-aged man leaning over the register and spearing the twenty-three year old with his beady little eyes that were trapped behind overly-thick aviator specs.

“Rats,” Kett exclaimed snidely, reaching out a patient hand to grab the black coffee in front of him, indicating just how much of a hurry he was in by leisurely draining the bitter dregs from his styrofoam cup.

Randall rolled his eyes. “Well?! Get a move on then! Dinner shift ain’t gonna prep itself!”

Kett snorted, flicking his mid-length curly black hair from his brown eyes as he slowly stood to his feet. “Sure thing, Randall,” he replied with a sardonic bite, simultaneously crushing his empty cup in a tight fist. “Can’t let our esteemed guests go without their processed meat and trans-fat pig-slop, now can we?”

“Fix the attitude, kid,” Randall heckled as Kett came around the counter. “If you don’t like working here you know where the door is!”

“Oh, yes, Sir!” Was Kett’s sarcastic reply as he made his way to the dirty little kitchen that doubled as his prison cell.

“Kett. I’m warning you—oh, hey, Autumn!” Randal greeted the nineteen year old as she walked up, his voice suddenly shifting from entirely scrutinizing into something overly pleasant and deep.

The obviously flirtatious tone made Kett’s fists tighten and his jaw clench...

“Sorry I’m late, Randall,” she smiled, not even the hideous pin-stripe Patty Palace smock able to diminish her magnificent beauty. “Traffic was murder!”

“Happens to the best of us!” Randall smiled in return. “Just go ahead and punch in for me.” He then moved away from the register he’d been occupying in Autumn’s absence as he turned back to Kett, his tone once again morphing back into gratuitous censure. “I’m taking off for the day. Make sure you drain the deep fryer tonight, Kett! You haven’t changed the oil once all week!”

“Alright,” Kett replied, unwilling to nurture the sarcasm he usually reserved for his boss as he was now too impatient. The sooner Randal fucked off the sooner he’d be alone with his beloved.

“Good,” was Randall’s satisfied reply as he turned on his heels to make for the gap in the counter that led out into the food court. “Don’t forget to close out your register tonight, Autumn,” he relayed courteously as he departed.

“Okay, Randall!” Acknowledged Autumn with a friendly wave. “See you tomorrow!”

“See you!” Randall replied, not even looking back before disappearing into the crowd of the food court.

Now that Kett was alone with his queen, nerves pooled in his stomach, vile little butterflies fluttering all around and making him feel dizzy. His cock began to swell, like it always did in her presence, harsh pressure quickly building up against the zipper of his baggy jeans in a sharp pinch. His eyes shifted from the grill to Autumn. Could she feel his eyes on her back? He grabbed the squeeze-bottle of oil beside the grill, eyes darting back to Autumn before he sprayed a generous amount on the hot plate. He laid a couple of frozen patties down, eyes forever shifting back and forth—and then Autumn turned around, making his heart and cock jump in perfect synchronization.

“Has it been busy today?” She asked, her sweet voice flowing through Kett’s ears like a choir of angels singing through his ascension into heaven.

He shrugged, swallowing the lump in his throat. He might’ve smiled if talking to his love didn’t make him so damn nervous! He was nearly sick with worry about what she thought of him, what he would say to her, what she’d say back. It was an endless cycle of excitement and disinclination that was enough to make anyone’s head spin. Because what if he said something wrong? What if she made him do something wrong? What if she made him hurt her like the others had?

“You’re not much of a talker, huh, Kitty-Kett?” She teased, flashing him that beautiful smile that made his knees weak.

“I, uh, I guess not,” he replied, eyes flickering up to meet hers for only a fraction of a second before swiveling back down to the grill as his cock had twitched far too violently for his own good.

“Guess you’re a deep thinker, then, huh?” She giggled merrily.

Kett’s heart and stomach traded places. His bewildered gaze rose up from the grill, the beginnings of a beaming smile tugging his lips that he’d just parted to speak when—

“Can we get some service over here!” Barked an unsavory customer with an ice-cream encrusted toddler latched on her hip.

“Fuck,” Autumn breathed with a roll of the eyes before turning around. “Hey guys, what can I get for you today?”

Kett’s expression darkened, his happy words dying on his tongue as he eyed the woman and her child like he meant to finish them both off with a meat cleaver. How dare she interrupt his conversation with Autumn?! The bitch was lucky his girl needed this job…

…By the time Kett and Autumn were closing up, the rest of the food court had already vacated. Their restaurant was always the last to bring down their steel security gate. This was Kett’s favorite part of the week: because he and Autumn closed together. This meant they’d clean the kitchen, just the two of them, all alone in close proximity for no less than thirty minutes. It was during this time that Autumn would usually make idle conversation with him and he would try his best to reciprocate without making a total fool of himself…

“...man I wish I could’ve decked that lady right over the counter!” Autumn was saying of the snotty customer they’d encountered a few hours back. His girl had a bit of an edge.

“Every cashier’s dream,” Kett replied, consciously trying to suppress the nerves in his voice as he covered a container of sliced onions with saran wrap

“It would be, like, a religious experience,” Autumn agreed with a light chuckle, nibbling on some fries as she leaned against the deep fryer while waiting for all the oil to drain out into a filthy old bucket.

“Hallelujah,” Kett smirked, his heart pounding in his chest, his rock-hard cock throbbing with each unrelenting pulse.

…He wanted her so bad it hurt…

“Want a fry?” She asked sweetly, offering him a crinkled yellow stick from across the simple two feet that separated them.

“Sure,” he accepted, turning at the waist to take the morsel and pop it into his mouth.

“I never see you eat any of the food around here,” she observed, taking yet another fry to munch on. “I thought maybe you were one of those clean-eating health-freaks or something. Ya know the kind that does yoga every morning and drinks kale juice every night?”

Kett’s grin widened into a proper smile as he chewed the fry, hating the synthetic texture and salty taste. But she’d offered it to him, so how could’ve he said no? “So—you think about me, huh?” he asked quite seriously.

Autumn smiled politely, almost uncomfortably. “Well, sure, why not? We are co-workers, right?”

Kett’s heart did a somersault of joy. “You, know, Autumn,” he began, his pulse thumping even more vigorously as he felt the leap he was about to take after learning Autumn did in fact think about him. “I think about you too—kinda a lot."

“Oh?” Autumn inquired doubtfully, a little crease appearing between her well-manicured brows.

“Uh, yeah,” Kett stammered. “I, uh—” he stopped to clear his throat. “I think maybe we could, uh—really get along. Um. So if you’d wanna—maybe we could link up sometime and—”

“Let me stop you right there, Kitty-Kett,” Autumn intervened, abandoning her repose against the deep fryer to stand up right. “I think you’re really sweet, and I like you as a friend, but I don’t date co-workers. It gets a bit messy in my experience.”

Kett didn’t say anything for several seconds, he just stared, as Autumn’s rejection shattered his heart into a million pieces. He felt like he was falling into a black hole, the deepest gravity sucking him down by a force far too mighty and suffocating to ever overcome.

“Y-you ok?” Autumn asked hesitantly after a time.

Kett reanimated at once. “Wh-what if I quit?!” He reasoned desperately, frantically. “If I quit, well, then, we could be together, right?!”

Autumn shook her head softly. “Kett, that would be insane,” she laughed nervously.

“Don’t. Laugh. At me!” Kett snarled, stepping toward Autumn in an intimidating lurch, his already-dark eyes clouding over in a sudden haze of violence.

Autumn jumped, her own eyes rounding with fear. “O-okay, Kett, I’m sorry,” she said quietly, swallowing hard against the lump in her throat; she could sense the developing danger now wafting all around her. “I wasn’t laughing at you I was more—”

“Yes, you were!” Kett interrupted, his voice shaking with rage as tears of heartache sprang into his eyes but never spilled over. “You’re not supposed to laugh! You’re supposed to be mine! God! I would’ve died for you!”

“Woah, Kett,” Autumn murmured, terror and awe shaking her voice. “You don’t even know me.”

“I do!” Kett insisted, grabbing Autumn’s biceps and squeezing with all his might. “I fucking love you Autumn! I’m in love with you!”

“Let go of me Kett, you’re hurting me!” Autumn insisted, an urgency laced in her voice that now mirrored her deranged stalker’s.

But Kett didn’t listen…

I liked the story a lot. I think you nailed the obsession prompt and I was surprised by how you included the oil prompt. Only the use of the court prompt felt a bit superficial by comparison, but I liked the unusual association with food court.

I was really curious to know how this continues. Because I'd say either Kett kills Autumn or she will most likely be his last victim? Either way, I would have loved to know what happens after.

I think one thing you could have done to underline Kett's obsession even more would have been to focus less on describing Autumn's appearance in such detail and focus some more time on what makes Kett later say "You’re the only person who’s ever nice to me!" You mention it early on, but I think that is the part that would make the story hit even harder than just "creepy guy obsessed with pretty girl". I actually forgot about him mentioning her being nice because it disappears in a flurry of physical details he "appreciates" about her.

This one hit home for me.

When I was seventeen years old I worked as an attendant/lifeguard at a community swimming pool in an over 55 community. One of the residents developed an unhealthy attachment to me. Same deal. I was probably the only person in his life who treated him nicely and his mind ran with it.

One day, I opened my locker (In the first floor corridor of my HIGH SCHOOL) and found a bouquet of roses from him therein. Scared the hell out of me.

I liked the Story, all the details of breaking the Victim were very detailed and good described. The oil made the rape even more disgusting for her.

I’m super stoked that you liked the story! Thank u for your compliments about nailing the obsession prompt too 😋 and of course, I’m happy to hear my use of the oil prompt took u by surprise 🤪

Real talk! On my first draft I only had the ‘Food Court’ setting for my use of the ‘court’ prompt. Cause TECHNICALLY it was never specified that the court prompt HAD to be a court of law 😛 However, during my editing process I felt a bit, idk, I guess nervous that the food court wouldn’t count as a use of the prompt so I threw in the little tid-bit about the courts ushering Kett into foster care when originally that sentence had only been about foster care 😂 So ya caught me red handed there!

The head cannon is that he kidnaps her and flees the state. I believe u took notice of the indication I drew that implied Kett had raped women before:
sinfulwords wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2026 9:27 am “You’ll see,” he murmured, his recent rage now replaced by a maniacal tenderness as he unzipped his pants, whipped out his cock, and guided the tip to her entrance before pushing it in with an ease that suggested he’d done something like it a hundred times before.

The reason he moves from state to state is because he kidnaps women and merks them when he can’t force them to fall in love with him (super classy right lmao?) It’s unclear, even to me, if Autumn would end up escaping his clutches, devolving into stockholm syndrome, or if she’d join the rank and file of Kett’s deceased victims. 🤔

I hear ya, and no lie it was HARD for me to write a story in 5,000 words or less. I’m sure you’ve noticed between Love of My Chains and my large comments, I am a verbose ass bitch 😭 So it was really hard for me to pick and choose which elements of Kett’s obsession to showcase and which to leave out. If this story wasn’t for a contest I think it would have easily exceeded 10k words as a one shot. But I had him focus on her physical appearance because a lot of what drives his obsession is actually just lust. He’s not right in the head so he mistakes infatuation for legitimate love…which brings us to your next point. He is not simply obsessed with her because she’s pretty or even just because she’s nice or that he’s lusting after her. He has MAJOR issues with love. Half of his mania comes from wanting to be loved SO SO badly that it makes him dangerous. I did try and convey that aspect by mentioning how his parents abused and neglected him; how he moved from loveless home to loveless home after being put in foster care; him emphasizing how happiness wasn’t in the cards for him; how he had no friends; his lamentation of 'why won't any of you bitches love me' rhetoric at the end, etc. but I guess it fell a bit short over all! 🙃

Okay sorry for talking your ear off! But I really appreciated your engagement ^.^

Hola, chica!! Thanks for reading and taking the time to share some of the reasons the story resonated with you—regardless of how unsettling those reasons are 🥲

I’m sorry to hear about those past experiences 😔 cause no lie that sounds CREEEEPPPPYYYYY af! Some old dude fixated on a literal teenager is always disturbing….like roses?!? That’s INSANE 😭 Like low key how did he even know which locker was yours and how tf did he even get in? I’ll bet your parents threw a fit—did they sue the school? 👀 We had armed campus police officers at my high school, so unauthorized trespass was totally unheard of. I'm shook some old dude was able to infiltrate your school, ngl! 🙈

Obsessive to the point he knew the exact milage of her car. Now that's dedication!

As I was reading this I felt like Kett has similar characteristics with Amanda from my story. Both live in a delusional world where they think they should be with the person they like, and the person they like should naturally like them back regardless of what reality says.

The only part that threw me off was when the fry oil was spilled. I understand you wrote it that way for prompt purposes, but you already mentioned fry oil earlier in the story and that would have counted for the purposes of the contest. It threw me off because fry oil is extremely hot. Even if the oil was turned off at some point during their shift, the amount of oil that was spilled on Autumn would have caused a significant amount of pain, possibly burns. Still, even with that slightly unrealistic part, it was a hot story that makes me wonder what body count Kett has besides Autumn.
