Just a thought here, how about making the theme the same for everybody in a round, that way we can rearrange brackets in case we have missing entries?

@Shocker I went with the 1 vs 1 matches because it worked well for flash fiction last time. But admittedly, it didn't work for short stories. But we could change the format to something like only the top half of the participants in terms of rating continue to the next round until only 2 or 3 remain and then we have a final match. And then everybody would of course get the same prompt/theme. It's a little less spicy then 1 vs 1 matches I would say but it's definitely more robust to dropouts. I'm open to the idea.
