Chapter 34 Two Blue Lines

I couldn’t sleep. Guilt and shame gnawed at my insides. My forehead had a tension headache from all the agonizing emotions. As I lay in bed I kept mentally slapping myself over my failure of self control. Every creak and whisper made me shake with fear. I kept asking myself the same questions over and over, what had I done? Would I ever stop myself from losing control like that again? What had I truly become?oooooooo

Sums rose around 7:00 am and I pretended to be asleep. I couldn’t talk to her or face her. Did I even deserve to have her as a friend? No, I was a monster. A monster that took whatever she wanted and whenever she wanted consequences be damned. I was fooling myself by doing good deeds and patting myself on the back. No amount of good I did would come close to erasing the pile of sins drowning my soul.

Roughly an hour later, Sums quietly came in. Too quietly. Something was wrong. She sat on her bed and I could hear her sniffing like she had been crying. I sat up in bed, “hey, what’s wrong,” I found myself asking. Her eyes were bloodshot red as she blinked away tears. “I’m…” she managed to croak out, but couldn’t finish before she started crying. I sat next to her and rubbed her back the way I knew she liked, all thoughts of my recent sins momentarily forgotten.

“I’m here when you’re ready,” I reassured her. Sums continued to cry. I hadn’t seen her this upset since the day she came home drenched with water after she had been abused. She touched my hand, and I realized there was something in it. I took it from her and felt like melting onto the floor once I saw what it was. Two blue lines. Sums was pregnant.

It felt like the world’s strongest man punched me in the gut after getting a running start. “I,” Sums said when she saw my face and knew I had seen the pregnancy test, “I…don’t know what to do.” She took a ragged breath and continued, “I’m so scared,” she whispered. Everything seemed to stop. Time, the universe, the world. My body felt like a porcelain doll that got dropped from the Empire State Building and shattered onto the pavement below in a million pieces. Suddenly I felt like I couldn’t breathe, but I was breathing hard. “Alex, ALEX!” Sums’ voice seemed so far away, so far…

My eyes snapped open as I regained consciousness. How long had it been? Sums was hovering over me, face riddled with concern and sadness. “Damn it,” I cursed. “Don’t…don’t try to move too quickly,” Sums advised. “You almost hit your head, but I managed to do a controlled fall to the ground.” I sighed, “how long was I out?” Sums snatched her phone and said “Around 10 minutes or so.” Another sigh escaped my lips “I’m sorry.” A wave of confusion washed over Sums’ sad face. “I should have told you to take your medication first then shown you the test results,” she said as she managed to compose herself.

I wasn’t really listening to her trying to shift the blame away from me. She didn’t really know it was my fault, all of it. Jason was supposed to be on the lookout for people too suspiciously drunk. I got him drunk, I took him away from his post, and because of that Sums got something precious taken away from her. Her own body. And just that past night I assaulted someone who I didn’t even know just because we were both alone. Bile threatened to escape my lips, but I managed to hold it down. Negative thoughts flew through my head faster than I could think or process them.

“Hey, ALEX,” Sums nearly shouted. I jumped, “What?” Sums stared at me intently. “You’re hardcore zoned out. I was afraid you were about to have another attack.” I shrugged. “Maybe.” Though I uttered one word, I could tell she caught a glimpse of my depression and self loathing breaking through my mask. “You act like you’re more devastated than I am,” Sums observed, “like you’re the one pregnant instead of me.” She held my hands, “Alex, is there something you’re not telling me?”

The silence after her question stretched into eternity. On multiple occasions I opened my mouth, took a breath, and then sighed unable to voice the thoughts that raced in my head. Sums let the silence between sighs hang there. Patient, kind, loving, a great friend, Sums was everything I wasn’t. I was a monster and I didn’t deserve to have a friend like Sums. After a long while, I finally made a decision.

“Yes,” I whispered, “I’ve been hiding things. Terrible things. I’ve hurt…” A flicker of fear entered Sums’ eyes. “Are you thinking about hurting yourself?” I shook my head and immediately said, “No.” Then I realized that wasn’t true and I was lying more to myself than to her. “Yes,” I whispered and walked back my denial, “but that’s not what I’ve been hiding.” Sums’ eyebrows went up, those perfect beautiful eyebrows, “I don’t understand…” she began. I held up a finger to my lips “you deserve to know the truth,” I said, committing to the decision I had made before the monster inside me tried to convince me otherwise. “But,” Sums visibly cringed at the ‘but,’ “Danielle and Violet need to know the truth too.” Her body relaxed and I could see she felt relief.

“I’ll text them,” Sums offered. I nodded, “Thanks, I’m not really good with telling people I need to talk to them,” I admitted. “They probably both had fun with their boyfriends last night and might be sleeping in,” Sums said. “It is Saturday after all.” I sighed “Damn, this day is going to drag on forever.” She gave me a look that was both sympathetic and something else I couldn’t quite interpret. “Yeah, unless you want to just tell me and if you don’t feel like talking afterwards I can tell Danielle and Violet if you want.” I shook my head. “This is something I need to tell all three of you at once.” Sums gave me a perceptive stare for a few moments, nodded, and said “I can respect that and wait patiently.”

Alex tells Danielle, Violet, and Sums everything.

Chapter 35 Confession

“Thank you for letting us come over this early,” I said. By now it was 8:30 and we were in Danielle and Violet’s apartment. “I know we all would probably be asleep in bed, but there’s something I need to tell all of you.” Violet yawned, “Sorry,” she cringed, “late night.” Danielle yawned next and the yawns were passed around for a little while before Sums spoke.

“Alex wanted me to say my news first before she tells us what’s bothering her.” She paused, then whispered “I’m pregnant.” Danielle and Violet both blinked sleep out of their eyes and appeared to wake up slightly. Before anyone could say anything, I added. “It is completely and totally my fault.” Everyone turned to look at me, bewilderment prominent on their faces. “Alex…” Sums started to say “…no,” I cut her off. My hands trembled and heart pounded as I uttered the next words “The CUNT rapist is real. And it’s me.”

Anger flashed in Sums’ eyes. “Alex that’s not funny,” she nearly growled. “That’s pretty messed up yeah,” Danielle added with a little flash of anger herself. Violet shook her head, “Alex I think you’ve stressed yourself out too much.” The anger in Sums’ and Danielle’s eyes faded. “You’ve been helping Sums all this time with no one taking care of you,” Violet pointed out. “You gotta take care of you.” “I’m not overstressed,” I said. Sums immediately shot me a disapproving look. “Ok, I am stressed, but I’m not making this up.” I insisted. “Please just listen to me tell you what I’ve done.”

I started from the moment I felt like I snapped after the failed therapy session. Told them about wanting to take whatever I wanted damn the consequences. Briefly stated my first victim was Daniel and told them about the conversation I heard that Monday after I had done it. Explained that the idea of the urban legend came from Daniel trying to tell everyone what really happened and no one believed him. As I continued speaking with shaky voice and occasional tears of shame, all of their faces went through various stages from disbelief, to anger, to confusion, to shock, and any emotion in between.

“So then, the night Sums was taken advantage of,” I continued, “I spotted Jason alone and thought he would be the perfect target.” My body was sweaty, and the words were practically pouring out of my mouth like Niagara Falls. “He appeared to be drunk and I thought I heard him slur his words. I didn’t know this at the time, but he was supposed to be the lookout that night. So when I got him drunk and led him away from the party it removed the safeguard that would have prevented Sums from being assaulted in the first place. That is why it is my fault.”

An uncomfortable silence hung in the air for a few moments as I took a few breaths. “I took Jason on Violet’s bed, then after Stan did what he did, I took him on Danielle’s bed. And last night I did it with someone outside right on campus, and I don’t even know that one’s name.” More silence. Their faces were now hard like iron. “So, I’m the CUNT rapist,” I repeated. “And it’s my fault Sums is pregnant.” More silence. “Someone say something,” I practically begged.

“I don’t know what you want us to say,” Danielle finally spoke after more uncomfortable silence. Sums was still as a statue and giving me an inscrutable look. I sighed, “I’m going to the police to confess. No idea what’s going to happen to me so if you don’t see me again…” “Stop,” Violet said in a soft but commanding voice, surprising everyone. Her eyes looked like she had been thinking intently about something. “Alex, tell me again about Jason that night. Not about what you did once you left the party, but about him at the party.”

In a confused voice I said, “He appeared to be drunk and slurring his words,” I repeated. “But after when I heard the Alpha guy apologize to Sums, someone mentioned he was supposed to be the lookout. That’s when I realized he wasn’t drunk and only thought he was.” “Ok now focus on the immediate moments after,” Violet instructed. “How much did you give him to drink? How much exactly?” I didn’t understand what Violet was getting at, and wondered why she was focused on this of all areas. But I decided to humor her, maybe she could see something the rest of us couldn’t. “I gave him a cup and he downed half of it, then started acting really drunk.”

Violet’s eyes sparkled. “Where did you get the drink?” I felt my face twist with annoyance, but I still continued to humor her. “From the bartender of course, who else would I get it from?” Violet turned to Sums, “Sums, you said Stan gave you a drink. Did you see exactly where he got it from.” She nodded, her words came out through gritted teeth, “Yeah I saw him get it from…” she stopped and put a hand over her mouth in realization. I felt goosebumps crawl on my flesh, knowing the answer even though Sums’ hadn’t said it. Now I could clearly see Violet was onto something.

“Clearly,” Violet said what we all appeared to have understood aloud, “someone wanted Stan and Alex drugged enough to pass out. Alex gave Jason the drink that was meant for her. Stan gave Sums the drink that was meant for him. The question is, why? Who was the bartender that night?” I shrugged, “Some guy in a batman mask. It was heroes and villains if I remember right.” Violet then chillingly said, “Which made a great cover for someone who wasn’t Alpha to pose as a bartender and get unwitting people smashed enough to pass out where anyone could do who knows what to them.”

“Diabolical,” I said and shuddered. “But what does that have to do with me?” I wondered aloud, “I still did terrible things.” “Yes,” Violet nodded, “You absolutely did terrible things.” She made a disgusted face then continued, “and you absolutely should confess.” She stared at me with intense resolve and said, “but do not for one second think that what happened to Sums was your fault. Someone else was pulling some strings and doing something dirty that night,” she pointed out. “If you hadn’t given Jason the drink, someone else would have. In fact,” Violet continued in a grim voice, “it sounds like from what you describe after your first…incident…with Daniel someone drugged the lookout then, too.” Sums continued to sit in silence, stone faced, both part of and separate from the conversation.

“Who would do something like that,” I asked and immediately recognized the screaming irony. Without hesitation Danielle confidently said, “Omega.” I frowned “But Omega wasn’t even active. Their charter was suspended.” Danielle shook her head, “Charter suspension doesn’t matter when you still have members on campus. Trust me, it’s them. Whenever there’s a fire alarm pulled, Omega. Whenever there’s drugs, Omega. Whenever someone puts a stink bomb in the...”

Violet cleared her throat and Danielle, taking it in stride, stopped talking. “We’re getting off track here,” Violet scolded. “The overall point here is, someone else has broken the law.” She turned to me, “You need a lawyer so that you are only charged with the crimes you committed, and not the crimes of others.” I blinked “Wait, would the police do that?” Violet nodded, “They do it all the time. DA’s office will do it too.” Suddenly I wasn’t so sure about Violet's intentions, “Why are you offering to help me with this?” I asked. Violet’s eyes stared at me with significance, “Because you helped me with Danielle remember? You got her to stop bullying Stan.” I understood then what Violet was doing. She appreciated I didn’t implicate her or Danielle in my assault of Stan and this was her way of thanking me. “Thank you,” I said. “I’ll have to make some calls,” Violet stated, “so the best thing to do now is stay right here in this apartment and don’t speak to anybody else about this.”

Interesting twist. I didn’t see that coming. Is the whole thing heading toward a happy ending now? I’m not quite sure yet…
