Clair Obscur Expedition 33 - Game of the Year 2025

Post by Claire »

Any of you who are even remotely into gaming will likely have at least heard of last year's Game of the Year Clair Obscur Expedition 33. And I'm naturally curious whether there are any players here beside me? :)

What did you think of the game? Does it deserve the hype? I enjoyed playing it a lot and I agree with most of the praise. I love the story and characters. As a fan of older Final Fantasy games I really liked to see turn based combat make a return in a mainstream game. And the soundtrack is just gorgeous. But the hype for the game is also reaching the point where I start to think that it's going a little to far maybe?

I'm starting to get worried that the success of the game will lead to most turn based RPGs including the parry mechanic from now on which I was not a fan of. I'm not saying it wasn't well done, I'm just not a fan of perfect parry mechanics in general, even in more action focused games. When I think of the pinnacle of turn based combat the Trails games come to my mind. I guess when I'm playing a turn based combat game I'm just not looking for a test of my reaction time. I can play Devil May Cry or God of War for that.

I think another aspect the game screwed up a little was Act III. As a gamer, I tend to do all the optional stuff before I advance the main story. And with Act III essentially being the final dungeon and a ton of sidequests, I ended up being vastly overpowered for the final boss without even going out of my way to grind. The story was still great, but the climactic fight itself was a bit of a letdown. When I replay the game at some poin, I will deliberately avoid doing any side content in Act III and challenge the final boss as soon as possible.

For this opening post, I deliberately avoided talking about specific plot points to not spoil anyone who just happens to stumble over this thread. So if any of you want to talk about the story in more detail like what you think about the ending, please remember that you can put spoilers in the spoiler bb-code like this:

If there are fellow Clair Obscur or JRPG fans in general here, I'd love to hear from you!

And I swear I'm not only liking the game because it has Clair in the title!

spoilerI have not played the game but I am aware it has multiple endings.
It looks beautiful. However any time based parry mechanic is not turn based, turn based to me means chess, anything else is real time :)

When I saw the title, I thought, is Claire making a game or something? Oh well. I'm assuming this is a video game, so thus ends my 'useful' contribution to the topic.
